Tanuja wanted this to be a hip hop tune, but it ran away into something more ethereal. Impossible to pin down: like the sea or the sky or the country itself.

We made this record as part of a residency in Hikkaduwa – and in this track we've used samples from a recording we made of Subathra Subramaniam, one of our fellow residency artists, singing karnatic ragas. Suba is Tamil Malay. Tanuja is Sinhalese Sri Lankan. Both women are British.

Bass Drums – hotel drumming (Kandy), tuk tuk sound system (Hikkaduwa)
Snare Drums – fishmarket (Hikkaduwa), Perehara whips (Kelaniya)
Hi-hats – birdsong (Udawalawe national park), Sunday market metal scales (Hikkaduwa)
Percussion – perehara whips (Kelaniya), train, fishmarket (Hikkaduwa), Mask Museum workshop hammers, passing lorry (Ambalangoda), peacock (Udawalawe national park), child shouting and chatter (Katharagama)
Bassline – child shouting (Katharagama)
Melody tones – Sunday market traders (Hikkaduwa), Mask Museum workshop chatter (Ambalangoda), birdsong (Horton Plains), karnatic singing (Hikkaduwa), bread van (Colombo)
